What are the most important public health issues facing the country today? In Martha’s Vineyard, there are severe opioid addiction issues, which is one of the five key drivers of the recently installed Bloomberg American Health Initiative. Join Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD, Associate Dean for Public Health and Practice at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as he shares the initiative’s initial efforts related to key public health threats: addiction and overdose, risks to adolescent health, environmental challenges, obesity and the food system, and violence. Dr. Sharfstein will be joined in the discussion of the opioid epidemic by Dr. Yngvild Olsen, a specialist in addiction medicine and alumna of the School. Learn more about ways communities are engaged in shaping policy, whether it is addressing opioid addiction in Martha’s Vineyard, changing the food environment in Baltimore, or pursuing public health approaches to violence prevention.
