The USS Bataan (LHD-5) is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship commissioned in 1997 and named to honor the defense of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. This ship launched March 15, 1996 and since then has been involved in multiple war, peace keeping and humanitarian missions.

Join other Hopkins alumni and friends for a rare opportunity to tour this active duty Navy amphibious assault ship while in port in New York. See first-hand and learn about this more than 40 thousand ton ship, its history,
crew and capabilities.
 
The morning will begin with two staggered tour groups. Once the tours are complete participants will walk across the street to Ogilvy & Mather for a light brunch, networking and a dynamic discussion about the Battle of Bataan and the role of the amphibious ships in the missions of: Strategic Presence, Projection of Power Ashore, Maintaining Sea Lines of Communication, National Diplomacy and Disaster Relief.

Important Notes and Restrictions:

**Pease keep in mind that you will be touring a working Navy ship. In order to get a full tour, guests may be required to walk up and down ladders, ramps, etc.

  • All visitors will pass through a magnetometer and may be searched as necessary to determine source of metal
  • Handbag and camera cases will be searched prior to entering any ship
  • Wheelchairs are allowed on the pier, but are not able to access U.S. Navy ships
  • Strollers will not be allowed on any ships
  • Parents/guardians must be capable of carrying children up and down ladders
  • No large backpacks, pocket knives, weapons or alcohol will be allowed aboard any U.S. Navy ship
  • Electronic devices are subject to examination for functionality--Cameras (still and video) are permitted
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing:
    • Polo or T-shirts with jeans or shorts
    • Tennis/running or flat, rubber-soled shoes
    • Do not wear heels, sandals or flip-flops
    • Do not wear necklaces that can get caught or carry bags that will be too heavy
    • Ladies should not wear skirts as guests will be climbing ladders (Navy stairs)
  • Bring plenty of water or hydrating drinks
  • Remember to bring sunscreen and/or sunglasses for warm/sunny weather

The U.S. Navy is not responsible for any personal articles or property lost or stolen while left unattended on the pier.
