Hopkins Chicago

We’ve had a great track record of giving back as part of JHU’s annual President’s Day of Service. After a nice run volunteering at Spooky Zoo , we’re trying something new. It promises to be hands-on fun and a great way to build a JHU connection with kids in our community.

OWLS Lacrosse is a school and park district-based sports program that uses the game to teach at-risk kids on Chicago’s south and west sides scholarship, teamwork and responsibility.

Executive Director Sam Angelotta has invited Hopkins Chicago alums and young alums to volunteer at the OWLS season-end tournament for kids 8 to 12. Sam and his staff will be there to direct us, but our roles will range from running some basic drills and serving as honorary coaches to managing equipment and bringing a healthy snack.

Since the kids are beginners and will be playing a simple 3-on-3 game, this activity isn’t just for ex-jocks or die-hard lacrosse fans. It’s definitely open to Chicago alums from all divisions. Our main purpose is to support and cheer on the kids.

Afterwards, there should be ample opportunity to meet up after our work with the kids at a nearby Mexican restaurant for drinks or a meal. Baltimore has even kindly offered to buy us the first round of Coronas or Tecates!
