Journey north for the vast untamed wilderness of Alaska and the 900-mile-long endurance race known as the Iditarod. Witness the ceremonial start of the race in Anchorage, and take advantage of the available optional activities such as a dog-sled ride. Venture north to Willow for the official start of the race and enjoy the beauty of the Knik River, located close by the Knik Glacier. Return to Anchorage via a scenic route, for further immersion into the beauty of the far north.

  • Explore the Anchorage Museum of Natural History for an immersion into all things Alaskan. The museum’s most popular exhibit is the Alaska Gallery, a 15,000 square-foot exhibit devoted to Alaska’s history.
  • Rub elbows with the mushers at the Musher’s Banquet at the Dena’ina Center, and observe as they choose starting positions by drawing names out of a boot.
  • Enjoy a day of leisure in Anchorage in which you’ll have the opportunity to participate in several optional activities (at extra cost) including learning how to dog sled, and riding a tram to the top of to the top of Mt. Alyeska.
  • Watch the ceremonial start of the race as teams charge down 4th Street on the first leg of the race.
  • Visit the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters for a musher’s tutorial before heading to Willow for the official start of the race.
  • Travel along the Knik River, which is fed by the melting of the Knik Glacier. The river road twists its way through the rugged landscape and offers spectacular views around every curve, including Pioneer Peak, which stands 6,398 feet in the Chugach Range.
