In this course, students will be taken on a guided reading of several of Einstein’s papers, including his 1915 exposition of General Relativity, and explore many of his unpublished materials. We will look deeply into his Zurich notebook and other archival materials, in order to get a better sense of the mathematical and philosophical foundations of his theories. The course will also delve into Einstein’s notion of the structure of space and the concept of causality. Often dismissed as nothing more than a bloody draw, the battle of Antietam was actually a crucial Union victory that stopped what was probably the Confederacy's best chance of winning its independence. It also led President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, meaning the Civil War was no longer just a fight for the union, it was now a fight for freedom. About the Event: The SAIS Alumni Speaker Series features a diverse array of distinguished SAIS alumni international affairs practitioners, business leaders, government officials, and more, for insightful perspectives and thought-provoking discussions on international relations, leadership, and other relevant topics. About the Speaker: Marta Youth joined the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) as Deputy Assistant Secretary in November 2020. Marta assumed the role of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in April 2022 and has responsibility for overseeing the Office of the Executive Director, the Office of International Migration, and the Office of Assistance for Western Hemisphere. Ms. Youth was previously the Director of Central American Affairs in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.  Prior assignments include Director of the Office of Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas in PRM from 2017 to 2019; Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy Managua, Nicaragua from 2014 to 2017; and Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada from 2011 to 2014.  She also worked at the U.S. Embassy in Quito, Ecuador as Press Attaché from 2008 to 2011.  Ms. Youth also served overseas at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Spain as a Trade Officer from 2000 to 2004 and at the U.S. Consulate in Chennai, India as a Consular Officer from 1992 to 1994. During her State Department career additional Washington, DC assignments included Country Assistance Coordinator for Russia and Moldova, South Africa Desk Officer, and Portugal, Malta, and Vatican City Desk Officer.  She has also been assigned twice to the State Department’s Economic and Business Affairs Bureau. We will meet at Miller Park Boat Launch (next to Nick’s Cove Restaurant and Cottages). After organizing gear, reviewing basic kayaking instructions and safety procedures, we'll launch our boats and paddle across the bay to the Point Reyes National Seashore. As we kayak along the shoreline we will discover the myriad and diverse animals which inhabit the Bay and its shores. In addition to the Tule Elk, it is common to see harbor seals, bat-rays, leopard sharks, osprey, river otters, and sea lions. The area around Hog Island is also rich in wildlife and scenic beauty. All guided tours are in tandem closed deck sea kayaks. The double kayaks track well, are difficult to capsize, and are easy to maneuver. All the necessary gear such as life jackets, paddles, and spray skirts is provided. We'll go rain or shine. Please arrive 15 minutes before your tour starts.Come prepared for variable weather. Mornings are often cool/foggy, typically warming up by late morning/early afternoon. We recommend dressing in layers. Please wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. The food packaged will be delivered the next day by BHP volunteers to local elementary schools. There, school guidance counselors will discreetly place the packages in children’s backpacks so those students can return to school Monday fully nourished and ready to learn.Due to the nature of the work that they do, no one under the age of 14 is allowed in the warehouse.
