Authentic Hawaii

With Astronomy Professor Timothy M. Heckman

November 30 - December 5, 2015

From $2,790

We invite you to join Professor Timothy Heckman and fellow Johns Hopkins alumni and friends to experience a most amazing exploration of Hawaii’s Big Island with an exclusive stay at a private historic mansion located on Reed’s Island in historic Hilo.

This insider’s journey includes visits to Volcanoes National Park, Tropical Botanical Gardens, the Hilo Farmers’ Market and, of course, beautiful beaches such as the Waipio Valley black sand beach. Professor Heckman will enhance your trip by offering insightful commentary on the astronomical research being conducted on the island. In addition, a visit to the Imiloa Astronomy Center and Planetarium along with a journey to the summit of Mauna Kea (14,000 ft.) for a specially arranged tour of the Subaru Observatory will give you a well-rounded experience not available to most visitors.

Your residence for five nights is Hilo House, a grand historic home located in the area where native Hawaiian royals used to reside. A stunning example of the Big Island’s colonial architecture, the property has been placed on the National Registry of Historic Places and Hollywood director George Lucas stayed here when shooting Indiana Jones in the rainforest outside Hilo.

During your leisure time, descend in time to historic Hilo and explore its museums, magical waterfalls, authentic shops, galleries and restaurants. This charming coastal city by the bay is known for its friendliness and diversity of residents.

This journey is perfectly timed to help you escape from the winter weather. Space is limited, so be sure to get your reservation in today. This enchanting setting will create memories for a lifetime!
