From the day the Johns Hopkins University enrolled its first class in 1876, scholarships have been provided to excellent students who otherwise might not have the means to attend. It was a condition of Johns Hopkins’ bequest that such support be provided for students “most deserving of choice because of their character and promise”.
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, its alumni, and its friends remain committed to this same tradit ion of philanthropic support for its current student body over 100 years after Mr. Hopkins made such provisions in his will. Scholarships play a crucial role in attracting the exceptional students that continue to make this a top rated medical school.
The Student Scholarship Reception is a wonderful way to bring together School of Medicine scholarship donors and scholarship recipients face to face. Students have to say a personal and heartfelt “thank you” and donors have a chance to see the impact on the lives they make. Personal stories abound, connections are made, and lasting friendships are formed.
This year, we honored Dr. Henry M. Seidel and the Henry M. Seidel, M.D., Scholarship Fund.
In honor of Dr. Seidel’s service to medical students as Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Seidel Scholarship Fund was established by alumni in the School of Medicine during his tenure. Since then, the Fund has received gifts from over 800 donors and is valued at more than $750,000. The Fund has awarded scholarships to more than 15 of Hopkins’ most promising students.

“Your financial support ensures that all students have equal access to the best education this country can offer, regardless of their ability to pay. And in my opinion, education is the great equalizer of this nation. In fact, I hold this belief to be of such great importance that I took a year off medical school to teach at my local high school to ensure that others may also pursue their dreams. Your financial support ensures that this creed remains true at Johns Hopkins.”
