Career Resources > Guide to the Informational Interview

Sample Thank You Letter

Dear [interviewee] (use the form that the interviewee preferred e.g. Debbie or Mrs. Johnson)

I appreciated the insights you shared with me about [company, career, industry]. In particular, your thoughts on [one of the areas you discussed] were particularly helpful to me in [some specific action]. I also found that your experience at [career, industry, profession] resolved the following issue for me...(This confirms that you really listened to the interviewee and cared about what he or she said.)

I particularly enjoyed meeting a fellow Johns Hopkins graduate and sharing our common experience and heritage. I've found Hopkins alumni to be more than willing to share their time and expertise with me and hope that I might be able to return this consideration to future graduates some day. (This demonstrates that you are committed to Hopkins and will repay the individual's investment of time and energy with a selfless act to someone else.)

I will follow up with Mr. __________ at __________ company and Ms. __________ at __________ company to whom you referred me. Would it be okay for me to use your name in contacting them? (Contacts are extraordinarily valuable. You must reassure the alum that you will treat them with respect.)

If you don't mind, I will send you an email as things progress to let you know where I stand.

Sincerely,

Grateful Career Seeker
Cc: [person who referred you to the interviewee]
