Maybe you’ve looked at databases of literary magazines, but have felt too overwhelmed by the sheer number that are open to submissions. You might have even paused to wonder what exactly those magazine editors are looking for and what grabs their attention in a submission. In Submit Now! we will uncover the mystery behind submitting to literary magazines by learning the ins and outs of choosing literary magazines that best fit your story’s style, what exactly captures an editor’s attention, and how the submission process usually works behind scenes at a literary magazine with magazine editor guest speakers. You will also learn the art of short story writing, then apply those techniques to writing and polishing a short story through in-class writing exercises and in-class group workshops. By the end of Week 6, you will have a completed, polished short story, cover letter, and list of at least ten magazines to submit your story to.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Boris Pasternak and Mikhail Bulgakov wrote two of the greatest Soviet novels. Their themes are love and loss under the Leninist-Stalinist state. Pasternak personalized the suffocation of emotion and creative expression, whereas Bulgakov brought the Devil and his entourage to Moscow to demonstrate the eternal nature of evil. The final class is dedicated to Akhmatova, the greatest poet of the era, who drew on her own experiences of persecution and suffering to write in praise of joy and courage. The online sessions will clarify any confusion about the characters, fill in the context, and share views about the material.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. We begin our exploration some 2,000 years ago, when the Southwest was the homeland of the Ancestral Pueblo people (the “Anasazi”), visiting such major archaeological sites as Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, and Canyon de Chelly, with their spectacular residential compounds, cliff dwellings, and intriguing petroglyphs. We then turn our attention to the historical communities of the Hopi, Zuni, and other Pueblo peoples of New Mexico and Arizona, along with their Navajo and Apache neighbors. We then consider the impact of the coming of the Spanish in the 16th and 17th centuries, and then the arrival of Anglo traders and settlers, the coming of the railroads and the influx of Easterners, and the genesis of the Southwest as a multicultural mecca, with a vibrant avant-garde arts scene extending from the 1920’s to the present day.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. However, few ever see their dream come to fruition. If you've ever wanted to write a book but don't know how or where to start or maybe you've tried in the past and couldn't get past the blank screen in front of you, I'll teach you how to get over your fear, doubts, and procrastination habits to get that first book done. Taking on a big project like this can be intimidating so I'll show you a framework to break this down into small, reasonable, and realistic steps to make writing and publishing a book an achievable goal. In this course, you'll learn the "anatomy" of a book, how to get your ideas organized into a succinct roadmap, and how to overcome writer's block. Finally, I will teach you how to approach the editing process, how to format your manuscript, how to design a cover, and how to self-publish on Amazon KDP: one of the biggest publishing platforms in the world. *Note: This course is open to both non-fiction and fiction writers.Reviews from prior students:“I thought that John did a phenomenal job both in planning content and presenting the course. His significant resources were very helpful and I will continually refer to them as I move forward in writing my book. He is very knowledgeable, having written several books on diverse topics.”” John was thorough and engaging. His handouts were extremely useful. His organization was remarkable. This was a great class.”“Very organized and methodical approach to self-publishing, John's course makes the whole process seem very doable."_____________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Odyssey Virtual March 30, March 30, SaturdayOdyssey, Leo Lubow, Virtual, Classic Street Photography: What the Masters Can Teach UsCourse Title: Classic Street Photography: What the Masters Can Teach UsInstructor: Leo LubowBrought to you by Odyssey   March 30, 2024 - May 04, 2024 (6 Sessions)  Saturday,  10AM ET  In Person at Homewood Campus  Course Description: What makes a great street photograph? What techniques, equipment, compositional elements, and psychology help elevate street shooting to a fine art? In this projector-driven course, we’ll explore these questions and others as we view and deconstruct the work and general approach of Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Robert Doisneau, Robert Frank, William Albert Allard, Ernst Haas, Alex Webb, Fan Ho, Elliot Erwitt, Diane Arbus, Wegee, Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, Garry Winogrand, Saul Leiter, Steve McCurry, Joel Meyerowitz, Vivian Maier, and a host of others whose work we promise you’ve never seen. Along the way, we’ll also consider whether all great street photographs have at least one element in common: an underlying vision or personal philosophy of the world. In the latter part of the course students will be encouraged but not required to show their own work. Please take note: portions of this course overlap with the professor’s black & white photography course, albeit often (though not always) with a different emphasis. Skill level: beginners and advanced.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Odyssey Virtual April 03, April 3, WednesdayOdyssey, Virtual, Michael Hill, The Battle of AntietamCourse Title: The Battle of AntietamInstructor: Michael Hill A&S '71 (BA)Brought to you by Odyssey   April 03, 2024 - April 17, 2024 (3 Sessions)  Wednesday,  6:00 PM ET  In Person at Homewood Campus  Course Description: With an in-depth look at the battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign, participants will come to understand how critically important September 17, 1862 was to the course of American history. Often dismissed as nothing more than a bloody draw, the battle of Antietam was actually a crucial Union victory that stopped what was probably the Confederacy's best chance of winning its independence. It also led President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, meaning the Civil War was no longer just a fight for the union, it was now a fight for freedom. While covering the military aspects of this story, and many of the fascinating personalities involved, the course will also put Antietam in its historic -- and historiographic -- context so we can better realize how our collective memories of it were formed, and reformed, over the 160 years since it was fought.*Please note that there is an optional tour of Antietam Battlefield on the 20th of April at an additional cost. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses. Odyssey Virtual April 15, April 15, MondayOdyssey, Virtual, Who Ordered the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln?, Mark CroattiCourse Title: Who Ordered the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln?Instructor:  Mark CroattiBrought to you by Odyssey   April 15, 2024 (1 Session)  Monday,  6 PM ET  Virtual via Zoom   Course Description: Mark Croatti will discuss William Hanchett's theories on the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, which remains one of the greatest mysteries in American history. While we know John Wilkes Booth pulled the trigger, we don't know who ordered the assassination, including who made it possible. Did Booth's team act on their own as part of a "simple conspiracy" or were they partners in a "grand conspiracy" involving elements of the Confederate and Union governments? In his 1983 book The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies, William Hanchett revisits the three theories on who gave the order—Booth himself or Confederate President Jefferson Davis, AND whether or not there was Union involvement, as suggested by Otto Eisenschiml in his 1937 classic, Why Was Lincoln Murdered? Hanchett's outstanding book makes a compelling case for all three possibilities. Whether you’re a Civil War buff in general or someone who’s interested in the Lincoln assassination in particular—or simply a fan of the 16th president—you won’t want to miss the compelling new evidence unearthed since both books were published.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Johns Hopkins Tuition Remission Policies  Johns Hopkins alumni, staff, faculty and their spouse or domestic partners are eligible for tuition remission for Odyssey lifelong learning courses.
